Boston Consulting Group

Saturday, August 20, 2005

The Boston Consulting group team of consultants lead by Vikram Bhalla (Partner and the first recruit by BCG, India) talked to us today for a couple of hours about the careers in consulting. It was insightful for people who had no idea what consulting was about. We also had two of our alums who interacted with the students after the talk. Well, the facts do and would remain that consultants love challenges and changes and should have the knack of finding and solving problems. They should love living out of suitcases which was clearly the ‘dislike’ point of two members of the team. And the long hours and no weekends are no hidden realities, though Mr. Bhalla was giving an optimistic view, which might apply at the level of a partner. An interesting point made by him when answering the question on difference between McKinsey and BCG – he compared them to Mercedes and the BMW – both are in the premium segment, but one is a status model and the other is a sporty model – Mercedes is more known among the customers, but BMW is more profitable and the BMW is never used as a taxi!
